SUMMARY:Upper Midwest Genealogy Institute
DESCRIPTION:This is not a PGS-MN event\, but we are posting it since it may be of interest to our members who are working on their family genealogy research. \nRegistration is open for the 2026 Upper Midwest Genealogy Institute\, scheduled for August 7-8\, 2026. Fondly known as UMGI – it rhymes with “bungee” — UMGI is a small and friendly two-day institute-style program for family history researchers who are ready to advance their research skills. \nUMGI 2026 focuses on resources and strategies for 19th– and early 20th-century family history research—with an emphasis on families moving to or through the Midwest. It blends lectures with student exercises that give students an opportunity to apply what they’ve just learned. \nInstructors include J. H. Fonkert\, CG\, Jessica Fontana\, and Elizabeth Williams Gomoll\, CG. For more information and registration: https://mngs.org/UMGI-2026. Enrollment is limited to 35 students. \nSponsored by the Minnesota Genealogical Society\, UMGI is a live\, in-person program at the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Mendota Heights\, Minnesota.

SUMMARY:Winona Bus Tour of Polish Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:The largest Polish settlement in Minnesota was in Winona and the footprint of where the Polish immigrants lived is still present in different parts of the city. \nWhether your Polish ancestors settled in Winona\, or you are just interested in seeing the Polish neighborhoods and hearing stories about them\, we invite you to join us in this unique venue. \nBus Tour\nWe are renting a school bus from 10 AM – 12:15 PM\, which will drive by a number of Polish sites in Winona. Joe Hughes (PGS-MN member and Winona Polish Historian) will provide background information as well as stories about the Winona Polish immigrants as we tour the different sites. This will provide you with a sense of what the immigrants’ lives were like when they settled in Winona (where they lived\, worked\, socialized\, attended church\, etc.).\n\nLunch and Discussion\nWe have a room reserved at the Winona County Historical Society for a box lunch and there will be further discussion and stories about the early Winona Polish lives. Following lunch\, there will be a tour of the Historical Society. We will end by 2:00 PM so you have the option to stop at other sites in Winona on your own before returning home (Marine Art Museum\, Polish Cultural Center and Museum\, Watkins Museum\, St. Marys Cemetery\, etc.).\n\nCost\nYou will need to find your own transportation to Winona and should arrive by 9:30 AM. We will set up a process for carpooling if there is interest to save on the cost of gas. The drive to Winona is very scenic and enjoyable! \nThe cost per person is $40. This includes the bus tour\, box lunch\, presentation by Joe Hughes\, and tour of the Winona County Historical Society. We are not limiting this to PGS-MN members and we welcome you to bring family members\, friends. \nWe will be sending further information as well as a registration form and process for payment to all PGS-MN members in mid-summer. \nWe hope you will join us for this unique opportunity!
